PROJECT TITLE:

Health effects of polyphenols and dietary fibre.

PROJECT SUMMARY. Description of activities and objectives:

The trainee will develop different tasks within the projects under development in the research team, always with the aim of exploring the relevance of polyphenols and dietary fibre for human health. In particular, he will perform general laboratory activities (preparation of standards and reagents, pH adjustment, etc.) and he will learn different techniques to determine polyphenol content and dietary fibre in foods as well as to measure polyphenols in biological samples, or markers of the biological activities of these compounds. For all these determinations, the trainee will apply solid-liquid extraction and hydrolysis procedures, followed by measurements either by spectrophotometry or by HPLC.
Also, the trainee will participate in the processing of data from a clinical trial with obese subjects. Additionally, he will get a general overview of research design in the field of Food Science and Nutrition and he will learn other non-laboratory skills (bibliography search, processing and interpretation of results, etc.). Finally, the trainee will attend to a seminar on laboratory safety and to other scientific seminars developed at the ICTAN-CSIC.
