PROJECT TITLE:
Ballets Españoles (1927-1929): A Dance Company for the Internationalization of Modern Art.
PROJECT SUMMARY. Description of activities and objectives:
This stay proposal is linked to the R&D project Ballets Espagnols (1927-1929): A Dance Company for the Internationalization of Modern Art (Convocatoria Europa Excelencia, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, ref. ERC2018-092829), which is directed by the supervisor. The project aims to study the impact of modern and avant-garde art in dance, considering the stage as a platform for wide spreading, through the case study of the Ballets Españoles. This company, directed by Antonia Mercé, la Argentina, was the first Spanish group to adapt Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes model, based on the concept of the Wagnerian gesamtkunstwerk, which consisted of integrating choreography, music, set design and libretto, signed by leading artists and intellectuals.
The activities proposed include the collaboration in the localization and analysis of the diverse sources conserved in Spanish institutions (such as the CSIC’s libraries, Biblioteca Nacional, Fundación Juan March, Museo Reina Sofía, Institut del Teatre, etc.) and the collaboration in the transference of the results into a database for the building of a Geographic Information System. The specific tasks of each student would be assigned depending on the stay’s duration and calendar. Therefore, the students will learn how to work with the sources from an interdisciplinary perspective as well as practicing with the wide possibilities offered by Digital Humanities in this specific case study.
